Strung Up

September 3rd, 2007 Posted in classical music, youtube

Why is the violin so hard to play? That’s the name of the linked article which was posted on my absolute favorite method of entertainment while waiting for DNA to break in the optics lab, reddit.com. The article has maths in it, which may or may not be appealing to you. I’m pretty sure it’s pretty entertaining and/or interesting. A much huger source of distraction value, however, can be found in the comments:

“Are you joking? Are you really comparing the skill required to play an electric guitar (a $1000 toy) with the violin?”

I love the internet.

Mostly unrelated, except that it was another violin-type post on reddit and hence I feel oddly and extravagantly compelled to stick it up here, was this violin/deck combo piece:

It’s fairly awesome. Watch out kids, we’re lulling you in with violins.

“When you pluck a note on a guitar string, there isn’t very much that can go wrong.” From this sentence, you can tell that whoever wrote it doesn’t know much about guitars. As a classical guitar player who struggles over and over to make the notes he “plucks” sound half-way decent, I can assure you that this is completely wrong.

I’ve never tried to play a violin, so I don’t know whether it’s harder than the guitar, but the guitar is damned hard!

(Of course, I’m not referring to electric guitars played with picks; I’ve never had experience with that instrument, either. But it has only a distant resemblance to the classical, or acoustic, instrument.)

The only experience I have with the classical guitar is when I took lessons for a year at a pretty young age, but remember being incredibly frustrated not being able to get things to sound right… it’s definitely a completely different experience to plucking around with a pick. The writer of the article was probably a violinist :)
