A Tasty New Venue
September 22nd, 2008 Posted in classical music

Prague is getting a new concert hall. As you can see from the rendering above, it will ditch the regular stage backdrop in favor of a huge-ass window behind the performers:
For the first time in musical design a large and elegant rear window behind the musicians will be carved out to allow for spectacular views in to the park behind the building. Each hall is formed of sensual free form curves that manage to combine aesthetic beauty with outstanding acoustic quality that is only enhanced by the ‘eye’ window concept.
But of course it’s frequently going to be dark outside during the performance. Perhaps they will have a laser show. That would definitely please everyone.
Incidentally, does the design remind you of anything?

Hm, what about lightning and storm outside? Talk about programatic music when a climax of a movement coincides with a “flash an’ bang” from nature!

I’d love to go to a Phish show at that place!

“For the first time” is a bit of a stretch, I think. Our local auditorium has a large back window where, depending on the time and the performance, you can see the ocean and sometimes the sunset.

Zoltan,
That would be absolutely amazing, actually… except to really get the full experience they would need to sync the lightning with a climax — wither by controlling the weather or somehow sensing it was coming and getting the orchestra to play really fast…
Mary,
You’re lucky to have your local auditorium on Gran Canaria. I bet you see some absolutely stunning orchestral backdrops looking across the Atlantic like that. It doesn’t look nearly as much like cheese, either.
